Day 9

We’ve been walking for two days. Hardly anyone has spoken during that time—I guess there isn’t much to say. Kat has not said a word the whole time, taking out his frustration and sadness on the occasional lone zombie. I’m not sure how long it will take him to get over Dirk’s death. Even though he had been very quiet, you’d always known Dirk was there, watching over you.

Now it feels like there is a gaping hole.

Pa is not looking well. He keeps saying he is responsible for things going wrong, but no one blames him. We all made the decision to take the car and it was just bad luck that he’d caught a bullet. Nomi has been changing the bandages, but I can tell it’s getting worse. Firstly there’s the smell, then there’s the discoloured skin and spreading infection.

Pa continued to insist that he’s fine and just needs some rest, but he’s running a fever and he’s very pale. If he does not get some antibiotics soon, he’ll lose the leg... maybe worse. Rik and I take turns pushing the cart and I keep chatting to Pa to keep his spirits up, but he drifts in and out of consciousness.

Kish is no better—she might as well be unconscious, or a zombie. She just walks along and says nothing, her sunken eyes fixed straight ahead. Every now and then, she collapses in tears, and refuses to get up. Nomi has taken it upon herself to help Kish come to terms with losing her brother, but it will take a while for her to recover. Kat commented that we should just leave her behind. That didn’t go down well with Nomi and an argument exploded between them.

They ended up screaming at each other and she slapped him in the face—sounded pretty hard, too. Kat did nothing to retaliate—he didn’t even flinch. He just stared at Nomi as if he wanted her to do it again. Then, just like that, he turned and started walking again.

Rations are running low too. We’re nearly out of water—I only have half a bottle, and I think I’ve got the most. There don’t seem to be any streams or rivers nearby and we need fresh water to clean Pa’s wound.

How did things turn so bad so quickly? One day we were focused and on our way to Robben Island... and the next, we hit Bloemfontein and everything went to hell in a matter of hours.

At this rate, I’m not sure we’re going to make it.
